There are two basic types of home insurance on the market: HO3 and HO5.
HO3: Open Peril Building and Named Peril Contents. Your personal property contents are protected from a list of perils. Examples include: fire or lightning, windstorm or hail, explosions, riot or civil commotion. If the peril (cause of loss) isn’t on the list, the insurance company doesn’t have to cover it.
HO5: Open Peril Building and Open Peril Contents. Your personal property contents are protected from all perils EXCEPT a list. Instead of covering only 16 things (odd perils can slip through), this covers everything except some odd things. It gives the policyholder a lot more power for more premium.
Read your home insurance policy. If there’s a certain thing you want to be sure you’re protected from, read your policy or ask for help understanding it.
