Fond du Lac Home Insurance Questions 6/9/2014 – Falling Trees!

House

This week in Fond du Lac Home Insurance Questions, the topic came up, “What happens when a tree falls over and damages my house?” This is an excellent question and a real concern for homeowners everywhere.

MATT’S TREE HITS MATT’S HOUSE

Matt pays his home deductible and insurance pays the rest of repairs. Debris removal is paid up to the limit.

MATT’S TREE HITS JOHN’S HOUSE

John pays his home deductible and insurance pays the rest of repairs. Debris removal is paid up to the limit. If John thinks Matt was negligent in his tree maintenance, John’s insurance company may sue Matt to have Matt’s insurance cover John’s deductible. To have negligence stick, you generally need to have documentation about the tree issue.

MATT’S TREE HITS MATT’S CAR

Matt pays his car comprehensive deductible and insurance pays the rest of repairs. If Matt doesn’t carry comprehensive insurance, insurance will not cover it.

MATT’S TREE HITS JOHN’S CAR

John pays his car comprehensive deductible and insurance pays the rest of repairs. If John thinks Matt was negligent in his tree maintenance, John’s insurance may sue Matt to have Matt’s insurance cover John’s deductible. To have negligence stick, you generally need to have documentation about the tree issue. Also, debris removal isn’t covered by either party’s insurance (it gets activated once the home deductible is activated, which doesn’t happen in this case).

MATT’S TREE FALLS BUT DAMAGES NOTHING

Insurance will not pay for debris removal when damage hasn’t happened to the home.

WHAT ABOUT TREES THAT LOOK LIKE THEY’RE READY TO FALL?

Insurance covers accidents that happen, not accidents that may happen. Ultimately the homeowner will save most by proactively preventing accidents. While getting stuff repaired is nice, paying your deductible and seeing your home insurance premiums rise from claim activity are not in policyholders long-term interest.
